A glance at the week:
Math- The student will recognize coin money: pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.
Centers/Activities:
- Coin Rubbings: The students will create rubbings of coins on pieces of paper
- Treasure Chest: The students will sort the coins in a "treasure chest"
- Magnets and Magnifiers: The students will explore various coins with magnets and magnifiers
- Burried Treasure: The students will search for the burried treasure in the sand
- Clean the Penny: The students will use several ingredients to determine what cleans a penny
- Buy a Letter: The students will identify the number of letters in their name and then use pennies (one per letter) to buy the stickers to create their name
- Candy Store: The students will use pennies to purchase "bubble gum"
Literacy- The student will recognize both the letter 'Gg' and the letter sound that 'Gg' makes.
Centers/Activities:
- Letter Detectives: The students will search for letters around the classroom
- Writing: The students will write stories while trying to include the letter Gg as much as possible
- White Boards: The students will use the white boards to practice forming the letter Gg
- ABC: The students will identify various letters and sight words while playing "Ice the Cupcake" (played by having a cupcake tray with cupcake wrappers, which have letters and sight words written on them. The student softly tosses a pebble into one of the trays. If the child can identify the word/letter, then they can "ice" the cupcake by placing a piece of white tissue paper on top) and "Floating Letters" (played by placing ping pong balls with letters written on them into the water table. If the student can identify a letter, they can place it in their cup. The student whose cup is "heavier" is the winner. That child receives a high five, nothing more- competition is not the object of the game).
Unit- The student will recognize American symbols including the American flag
- Students will identify differences between the current American flag and the first American flag created by Betsy Ross
- Students will create a flag that represents their life
- Students will help to create a classroom flag
